Review of The Haunting of Ashburn House
By: Darcy Coates
Freelance writer Adrienne has inherited a large estate from her Great Aunt Edith, a woman she has never met. Unfortunately, there is something strange about the house and there are many rumors about the house being haunted. Unfortunately, it is starting to look like the rumors might be true and that Edith might have murdered her family.
This was okay and I didn’t hate Adrienne, just found her annoying at times and dumb. My biggest gripe is she didn’t figure out how the candle would be helpful, especially since Edith basically told her to do that. We didn’t enough time with the other characters for me to form a strong opinion, but they did feel cliché with personalities that felt just like characters from any small-town story. I adored Wolfgang the cat. The author spent too much time on mundane details of her routine. NOS4A2 and Imaginary were long, but we didn't get a play by play of what they were doing. If we got Victoria McQueen or Charles Manx pouring it would because they were revealing something important or it was relevant to the plot. Writing the is good with some beautiful descriptions of the setting. I don’t know if the implication of it being a ghost story was to hide the twist, but it’s technically not a ghost story.
