hdharrison 's review for:
La Belle Sauvage
by Philip Pullman
This review is difficult, because I really enjoyed large parts of this book.
It was at some times too similar to Pullman's other works, but also different enough that the similarities felt habitual rather than intentional. However, I love those works and it was fun to be back. I love Malcolm, the smart brave boy who leads the reader through this story. We've also got baby Lyra throughout this story, who we are predisposed to love, even if she wasn't an infant.
It was very fun to read, but went on perhaps too long. At some point, when we were in fairy land, I was not quite sure where we were going with this. The ending felt rushed to me, and not very clever - which is not normal for Philip Pullman. I'll be reading the other books in this series and hoping that things wrap up better by the end of them.
