Mister O by Lauren Blakely
4.0
Well this book was utterly charming book. While a standalone, we get to see the leads from Big Rock make some cameos, which were well placed.
What I liked:
- The banter. If a book doesn't have the banter and makes me laugh out loud on several occasions, it usually doesn't get more than a 3-star review. This banter was exceptional. You have two someone dorky leads, who nerd out on all sorts of things, and you could really see the connection.
- Nick. This is one of the better written male leads I've read in a long time. He's got depth. I like that he's neither a saint nor a manwhore. I like that he isn't someone who has to be "tamed," and acknowledges that he doesn't know everything and doesn't always know how to read Harper.
- The relationship evolution. The relationship progressed in a very natural way to me. There was little angst and drama, which in this case was a good thing.
What I didn't like:
- The "teach me" trope. While I liked Harper, I am SO TIRED of the "I'm in my mid-twenties, but am so inexperienced that I need a more experienced man to show me everything about relationships/sex" trope. Listen, I'm sure women like this exist. In fact, I know they do. But it's just a little tired in contemporary romance these days. This wasn't totally overplayed, but it was present enough to take away from the book for me.
Bottom line:
This was a good one and I didn't have many complaints. And what's more, the universe continues with THREE additional books from these lovely group of characters. I'll be pre-ordering each and every one.
