Women & Power: A Manifesto by Mary Beard

4.0

An easy but challenging read. Mary Beard compares the power women have in antiquity to modern day. She addresses some really poignant topics in an accessible way. The original texts were speeches that she delivered earlier. I really enjoyed the first 'section' on the voice of women and how coming of age for men in antiquity meant being able to speak in public, but this was not acceptable for women to do the same. One of my favourite sections was related to a punch cartoon - Miss Triggs

Although it is not something I have personally come across, I have friends and family who have come across this kind of sexism.
