It was strange to listen to this book as an adult; I remember reading it multiple times over as a child and finding it somehow compelling. Now I'm mostly horrified by the main character's stuck-up behavior, even if it's understandable, and I can't decide if it would be a good or horrible way to introduce children to the plights of farm workers, uninsured people, and undocumented immigrants. Regardless, none of the characters are likable, frankly, so the book never quite draws you in.
