The Water Wars by Cameron Stracher
3.0

Cameron Stracher's 'The Water Wars' is an amazing insight to a dystopian world lacking one of the world's most vital resources, drinkable water.

The conception of the novel was captivating from the start, and though I enjoyed reading the novel. A nice quick read, that has a compelling plot line and characters as well as an adventure through a future without water. It is an amazing writing work about a time and place that has not even begun to exist yet, and yet the writing in the novel wove the setting to life.

However, I couldn't be sucked in.

I think the novel could have been much better, if one were to think of it affecting the audience emotionally. It's great as it is, but it is lacking something.

Vera was a great character, strong and determined, but...lacking. I found that she and Will acted rather childishly, or were portrayed younger than they are. Considering the setting and their ages, they could have had a more mature personality. And what was with Ulysses? Sure, great supportive character but in the end, he was acting like a second father to Vera and Will, as though they were children. Sure they're teenagers, but most teenagers these days are aware of things that adults assume they aren't supposed to know yet. The character development of Vera too was lacking, we saw the story unfold through her eyes, but she seemed empty behind her actions. One other thing that bugged me, that usually overwhelms me in other novels, is the lack on Vera and Will's part to think about their parents when they disappeared. Even if it was one line that said 'I wonder how mum is' or 'Do you think dad's worried?' would have sufficed in reflecting the absence within their hearts for their parents. After all, it's not as though their parents had treated them badly. Instead all Vera could think about was Kai.

whoa...I really picked at the story.
Ignoring all those points, the story over all was very well put together and written. There is action, adventure, danger, thirst, love (a little anyway, but enough) and victory.
