The Rainy Season: Three Lives in the New South Africa
by Maggie Messitt
A compelling story of post-apartheid Africa told through the stories of two women and one young man through three seasons. Messitt immersed herself with the people and families in Rooibok, South Africa to document real life, and the result is a compelling, spell binding read. It left me breathless and not wanting to “leave,” the story and place. Written so beautifully, with just enough right words and background, I felt like I knew Dankie, Regina and Thoko by the rainy season chapter. I read it twice- once for story, once slow to savor the experience and the words.
This book stands the test of time- captures a time in history.
