The Secret History by Donna Tartt
5.0

what the fuck.

This is the most well-written book I have read so far. The descriptions are all so beautifully written and detailed that you feel you like you are actually in Hampden, are part of the story.

Although I must say, this book is not an easy read, particularly for anyone who isn’t proficient in English. There are also countless literature references and plenty of lines in French, Italian, Latin and, of course, Greek and Ancient Greek (thank god for my one semester Latin class, it made me understand a ton in this book).

You first see the characters as Richard did - as these larger than life, mysterious, captivating, glamorous, romanticised ideas, rather than people (except Bunny, never liked that *** and couldn’t wait for him to be killed). But after the first murder they start to unravel, you start to see their flaws, the illusion is shattered, and you feel betrayed by how rotten they truly are.

Camilla is manipulative, Charles is abusive, Francis is predatory, Julian is superficial and Henry is just overall a psychopath.

Henry is the true main character, Richard is just the narrator. He’s a pushover, he’s basically just pulled along for the ride (and takes us with him).

criticisms:

- chapters are too long
