I Kissed Shara Wheeler by Casey McQuiston

3.0

I love reading YA books because I love imagining what my life would’ve been like if these YA books were around when I was younger. Was this the perfect book? No. Would it have been the perfect book for my sophomore year self (who didn’t know she was gay)? Absolutely. It was a sweet, silly, enemies-to-lovers story that would’ve got me daydreaming in high school. It truly fills my heart with joy that this style of YA books have become the mainstream type. Books were such an important part of my young coming-of-age, and I am thankful that if I didn’t get this exposure, at least future generations will. ALSO Smith’s character was INCREDIBLE representation that isn’t often shown. Such a wonderful story for him.

As far as impact for my current life goes, this book summed up a lot of what I feel about the south in a really nice (if rosy) way. The desire the characters feel to build a better south and connecting with their home state of Alabama was really awesome. Chloe even says at the end she was going to pretend when she was in college that she never moved from California to the south, (a thought I had many times), but she realized she has a sort of love for this place even if it hasn’t quite become the place to love everyone back. Sometimes the religion stuff hit a little ~too~ close to home, but I guess that’s good.

This was a very enjoyable audiobook for my drive!!
