It's hard to stand out in the middle grade realistic fiction genre. This one stands out.

It deals with a LOT of heavy subjects. Economic disparity, bullying, alcoholism, divorce, etc. Max is a strong and courageous character, and she is the perfect heroine for introducing these things to young readers. There's a whole lot of heart in this book, and middle grade readers will definitely want to sink their teeth into it.
