Stone Blind by Natalie Haynes

2.75

I wanted this to be so much better than it was, but if I hadn’t been stuck on an airplane with a baby screaming, I never would have finished it. Maybe it’s because I already interact with the Greek stories through a feminist lens, but this version of Medusa felt very un-nuanced. There wasn’t a lot of substance beyond the exploration of her story from her perspective. I can certainly respect the time and knowledge that clearly went into the piece, but it didn’t work for me. I was going to rate it 2.5 but I did like the ending and personifying Medusa’s severed head was absolutely the most  interesting thing the author did in this book (along with the olives and the crows, that was fun). The straightforward writing style just wasn’t super engaging for me, but it probably is for others so I would still give it a shot to see if you like it if you’re on the fence.
