Failure to Protect (Dre Thomas & Angela Evans, #4) by Pamela Samuels Young

4.5

I mean, the title says it all: failure to protect. Everyone was looking out for themselves and their own best interests while Bailey was suffering, carrying a weight no 9 year old should ever know about, let alone experience.

This story goes there and can be emotionally taxing. The author is really good at drawing you in and pulling every feeling out of you. In my case, it hit a little too close to home, having experienced bullying through elementary, middle, and high school. Despite the gut wrenching, heartbreaking nature of the book, it touches on a very real crisis that needed to be addressed and I think it was handled realistically. And to keep us readers from completely losing it, there were moments of levity and comedy - namely in the form of Apache. A standout character in his own right who deserves his own spinoff.

I’m so disappointed there aren’t more books in this series because I’m truly a fan of what the author accomplished. I want - no, need - more books from the author, period.
