Jamaica Inn by Daphne du Maurier
3.0

“She realized for the first time that aversion and attraction ran side by side; that the boundary-line was thin between them.”

Obviously I went into this with too high of expectations, expecting this to be just as spell-binding as [b:Rebecca|17899948|Rebecca|Daphne du Maurier|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1386605169l/17899948._SX50_.jpg|46663]. Daphne du Maurier is still a wonderful writer no matter what and is an absolute queen at creating an atmospheric story but this one didn't quite have a "spark".

Jamaica Inn is set in the Cornish moors (which gives it some [b:Wuthering Heights|6185|Wuthering Heights|Emily Brontë|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1388212715l/6185._SY75_.jpg|1565818] vibes) and there is almost a pirate-y feel to it. The story its self was a little weak in my opinion, it wasn't bad but it was simple and the twists that did come were a bit expected. It felt like just reading an old mystery rather than a work of genius.

Mary Yellan moves to the Jamaica Inn with her aunt and uncle after the death of her mother, and quickly finds it to have some dirty dealings. Mary spends the book trying to figure out how to bring her uncle to justice while keeping everyone safe. There is a bit of romance but it felt very strange.

Overall, I'm still happy I read it, it was entertaining and I love du Maurier's style but this one was just signficantly more SIMPLE than "Rebecca". I am interested to see how the movie(s) compare and to read a few more of her works.
