This was a really great middle grade book. Definitely the hero's journey type of thing and I loved Amari. Her voice was so easy to listen to and understand. Her struggle to find her brother was so realistic to how I imagine a young girl would act: believing she had to do everything she could to find him and it was all up to her. I loved that she stumbled upon this hidden world and she finds out that she's this magician and it turns her racial struggles into the struggles of being a magician. I thought that was such a good portrayal of the prejudices and discrimination that she has always had to face. It was just a really great story all around and I can't wait to continue reading about her adventures.
