This was my second read of this fabulous book - the first time when I was much younger. It remains a masterful history, gripping read and enlightening journey through a century that was full of turmoil, plague, war, insurrection and misery as well as a time when many modern themes were already visible and movements to bring about political and social change manifested. It is not a brief read, but with dedication and patience very rewarding indeed. If you read one history of the middle ages, this is not a bad one to pick!
