G is for Gumshoe by Sue Grafton
4.0

Much weirder than the previous entries. To be entirely honest, the mystery is kind of secondary to the bulk of the plot. Kinsey has a hit out on her straightaway, and the main plot comes from her trying to go about what SEEMS like a pretty standard missing person case while under constant threat of murder. It's a neat set-up, and the tension between her and a new character out to protect her drives the bulk of the plot. However, despite the way Grafton makes these stand alone for the most part, I wish that relationship was a little more framed in relation to what came before? Kinsey has had a lot of previous attempts on her life and has done her part solving some serious stuff, and that seems to go ignored by this new character and even Kinsey herself -- a trope of the series-of-stand-alones that I found a bit annoying. But, as ever, the charm is from Kinsey's voice, and that was enough to keep me turning pages late at night.
