Human Rites is a satisfying end to the HMRC trilogy. I love this series, however, I do think this is the weakest of the three books.
Starting off with the positives, I love all the characters and their stories. The book has super strong themes of female friendships and power. It’s wonderful that a magic/fantasy story can have such an amazing group of characters.
I enjoyed the plot for what it was. There’s a lot going on and the ending felt super rushed. I thought the writing wasn’t as good as Dawson’s first two books either - too many swear words and pop culture references, which is saying something as a working-class gay! But they felt like they got in the way of the story. The entire writing post-battle was so bland, it read like a first draft.
I felt like this book could have gone through a few more edits, but needed to get out the door? There were diamonds in the mine, but too much dirt got through.Loved the Senait storyline with the time travelling, but it didn’t feel integrated with the series as a whole. The fight with Satanis also felt super low-stakes, like what do you mean they defeated him, the demon king, with a stab in the chest?
Overall, I went into this book really excited, and I came out of it still excited, but less than I anticipated. I fear this book suffered the problem with a too-soon-deadline. Another year and I believe the edits would’ve made this book 5-stars. Still, a great end to a great series.
