I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith
4.0

I couldn’t help but have the impression that the Mortmain family was doing poverty badly. There are 4 of you; if you barely have food to eat, why is no one working?! It’s not like “the villagers” don’t have jobs. Or maybe they don’t have jobs and they instead accept “good deeds” in their old age — which is apparently a bad thing?

The whole family seemed a little trapped between two extremes in a not entirely believable or endearing way… that said, we have some romance, some beautiful prose, some memorable lines, and a touch of Paganism.

The first 100 pages are very slow but the last 50 or so are gold. Averages out to 4 stars in my (proverbial) book.
