Emma
by Jane Austen
The 2020 adaptation of Emma is one of my favorite films ever, so I was both excited and nervous to dive into the source material. I ended up having such a fun time—it genuinely felt like Regency-era reality TV. Emma as a main character can definitely veer into being unlikable, but I felt so much sympathy for her growing up as a sheltered, privileged young girl and then having to reckon with the limitations that upbringing has placed on her worldview. The prose is charming and witty and so intrinsically “Austen.” This is my second Jane Austen, and I just know I will end up devouring the rest of her works because I can’t get enough!
