My Brilliant Career by Miles Franklin
3.0
'My Brilliant Career' is an old book which I didn't think I would much like. Getting into the book, I was pleasantly surprised by Miles Franklin's poetic and matter-of-fact way of writing.
When I started reading this book, I was really bored. Even being an Australian myself, I find stories about the bush and landscapes of Australia poetic but uninteresting. That theme runs through the whole book but I got over it.
I believe this was quite a sad tale for Sybylla, the main character, as she doesn't accept herself for who she is and denies the love that one Harold Beecham has for her. I didn't like how she put herself down in her interests, her intelligence and her looks. Alas, I still enjoyed this story (it did take me a long time to read though) as it is unique and different to other books coming from this era.
