I think I'll remember this book forever. bell hooks' words are so poetic and honest. Everything I read from her has so many lessons within it, and this memoir was so touching and sentimental in so many ways. The vignettes in this book are quite simple at face value but hold so much weight when you dissect the intersections of class, gender, race, sexuality. She discusses her childhood in the most immersive way, and I adore so much of the nostalgia and wisdom hooks is able to touch on from early childhood memories. I think any time I read about girlhood experiences, specifically from black women, it just has such a visceral and internal effect on me that brings me to tears. Her struggles with self and growing up could be related to by many, but there's something about the openness in this book that makes you truly see her and everything she is as a woman, a writer. I love so many quotes from this book it's too hard to pick, but the next slide is an emotional one that felt so special to me. Would absolutely recommend this!!
