This was overall an interesting story, with a unique magic system. However, I wasn’t particularly attached to any of the characters, and I think the story’s arc was a bit too slow. As much as I love dual POVs, I don’t know if this story needed it since there really wasn’t a different in voice for the characters for me—wants/needs, sure, but voice, not really. And while I liked the magic system, I don’t know if it was completely thought through—the gems being given willingly to a specific person didn’t hold up so well at parts (the captain thought he was giving the brooch back to Jameson, not Roger, so would the gem have worked? And the gems being thrown on the stage in the big tent? Wouldn’t Luxe be the only one who could use them?). Maybe I’m overthinking it, but they stress SO much about the gems being given willingly to a revelle so often it didn’t make much sense to me. I admired the love story and how important family was to the characters, and I thought the setting/time was well done. Overall, I enjoyed it, just might have loved it if it were tightened up a bit.
