The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

5.0

I really wish I could give this book more than 5 stars. I feel like it deserves more.

The Hating Game is Thorne’s debut novel and I can already guarantee that I will read the next book she writes. This book, though, tells the story of Lucy and Joshua, who hates each other so much they can barely stand to be in the same room together. They are, though, stuck together, because they do work for the same publishing company, both essential for their respective boss. They play all kind of games together, all under the roof of one main game: The Hating Game. Everyone knows how hate and love can be close emotions: is this how it will end for them? or is this another game ?

This book was beautifully written. Thorne’s writing style is simple, and straight to the point which makes it easy to follow every twist of the plot, as small as they can be. She also has crafted delightful characters in both Josh and Lucy. The witty lines they throw at each other are perfect. They each have strong characters that both evolved beautifully and, most importantly, realistically. I like how, from the beginning, it’s made clear that both main characters couldn’t be more on the opposite side and how, throughout the book, the lines are getting more and more blurry (could they actually share some common ground??)

A warning though: you have to know this is an adult contemporary, not YA, so there are a couple sex scenes in this book, beautifully written though. Just know that they are there.

I honestly just want to pick it up again, even if I just finished it and have an endless tbr to go through… sigh.
