I think what this book misses most is a more consistent tone.

This plot could be presented as a more glum story about two blue collar men that went through a seriously traumatic event doing sex work on the side, or as a silly fun story about two friends using sex work as an excuse to get close. But it felt like it was whiplashing between these two takes and I really wished the author would have taken a butcher knife and cut away all the silly, cause I really wanted that first version of the story.

And not for nothing, since "it would have been good if it was written better" could be said about any plot really - there were some genuinely nicely written parts, I just feel they were muddled by the parts that only belong in formulaic rom-coms.
