The Troop
by Nick Cutter
This was a solid 3 star read, the story is about 5 boys and their scoutmaster Tim who happen to encounter a sick man carrying an "illness", the story unfolds from there. It has all the right elements, the big bad, possibly more than one, boys stuck on an island, survival, psychological and emotional conflict.
It has all right elements but still misses the mark for the simple reason is that these characters aren't that likable, you don't like them until the very end and that only applies to two, maybe three of them which makes this novel more gorey than scary.
I expected to be horrified to my core, I expected psychological terror and got nothing, I think this would work great in a movie, just not in a book.
The writing style is easy to follow, I finished it in a day and although it did not cut it, I will be keeping an eye on Cutter's other works.
