King of Scars
by Leigh Bardugo
4.5 stars
As I have stated time and time again, I LOVE it when a book uses multiple perspectives to tell the story. I love getting to see into everyone's minds, and it makes me feel like I understand the story better. However, I think this book sometimes leaned into that crutch a little bit too much. I don't think this story would have been possible without the differing perspectives, but there were a couple too many "cliffhangers because the chapter ended and pov switched" for me. And because one of the three main characters was pretty separate from the other two, sometimes going to her POV was a hard shift.
It also definitely took me a long time to read this book, because I slumped immediately after reading the S&B trilogy so quickly. But this was very well-written, and I really like this side of the story. Since it is set after all the previous books, and with characters from both the trilogy and the duology, it is fun to see the way the world has changed and continue to explore different aspects of it. The actual plot took some build-up, and moved kind of slowly until the very end, at least from Nikolai and Zoya's perspective. I think that there is a lot of potential for Rule of Wolves (the next book) now that the big reveal has happened.
