Intimacies
by Katie Kitamura
This short book is pure genius. In so few pages, Katie Kitamura explores precision of language both in how the (unnamed) main character wrestles with objectivity/subjectivity in her job as an interpreter at The Hague as she interacts with war criminals, lawyers, and other interpreters. Kitamura also does a brilliant job exploring personal and political complicity, loneliness, and belongingness. Also, I love that this book was set at The Hague—I ended up in the Google vortex for a while. I can totally understand all the accolades that this book received.
