Pride, Prejudice, and Other Flavors by Sonali Dev

5.0

Wow. I am absolutely blown away. This is one of my favorite retellings! Taking on the retelling of the most iconic romance novel and doing it absolute justice is no easy feat. And yet, here I am to tell you, she absolutely did it. The characters were complex and yet, I was easily able to sympathize with a neurosurgeon. I have very minimal interest in the medical field and yet, I could feel her guilt, rejection, pride, shame.. all of it. It’s the characters drawing you in that is the beauty of this. The only characters I did not find endearing (I don’t think she was necessarily meant to be), was Emma. You would rather die than live with a disability?? If that’s not one of the most ableist things I’ve ever heard… I couldn’t like her, even though DJ clearly loves her sooo much. In conclusion, read this as soon as you can get your hands on it. Sonali Dev has done Jane Austen proud and I am here for it. And the next one, and the one after that.
