The Broken Girls by Simone St. James
3.0

“Mary Hand, Mary Hand, dead and buried under land. She’ll say she wants to be your friend. Do not let her in again!”

“Of course there are bodies here. This is Idlewild Hall.”

“Ghosts and dead babies and murdered girls. What next?”

I went back and forth on whether to give this 3.5 stars and round up to 4, but ultimately decided 3 stars most accurately described my feelings on this book. I liked it. I didn’t love it like I did The Sun Down Motel. I felt like it had glimpses of genius but many areas ultimately landed flat. The characters were good and I liked the setting. I am a big fan of Simone St. James’ writing style. And I really liked the Mary Hand part and wished more focus and story was on that aspect. But many of the big reveals lacked the power that they were intending. So it ended up being a little bit of an underwhelming disappointment even though, like I said, it was a good book. But ultimately, average.
