Thank you BookFunnel for sending me an e-ARC of this book.

A Cain and Abel retelling set in Trinidad, He Burns by the River immerses the reader in the village of Sapo as Roran fights to save his older brother. The combination of tension and love between the brothers was so well written and so was the magic system. I also enjoyed how the author explored themes of colorism and (briefly) homophobia. This story was intriguing and incredibly engaging; I flew through it!

My only critique is that I didn't realize the time the book was set in. This could be better integrated into the book as it adds significant depth into the storyline (though I may have just completely missed it).
