3.5 stars (grrr why can't we give 1/2 stars?). This book is far from what I would normally gravitate to. I really enjoyed the way the book is written and how the time periods are constantly jumping. There is much sorrow in this book and in Helen's life, I feel that her tragedies would have been to much to read through all at once, and the discontinuous nature of the novel allows relief from that. From my point of view there were 3 climaxes in the novel and by writing in this style they could all occur at the end of the novel rather than like a roller coaster. I would have liked to read more about John and Jane.
