The Invisible Man
by H.G. Wells
For whatever reason I had long ago written Wells off as old fashion, out of date, Science Fiction. Possibly because at one point I was a Henry James Devotee and there was some dustup between him and Wells along the way.
In the last year Ive read Time Machine, War of the Worlds, and now The Invisible Man. Damn good stuff.
I particularly enjoyed the literary trick where he established a bit of suspense-who is the Invisible Man? Where he come from? What is this all about? And while using a 3rd person narrative. Then he had the Invisible Man come across and old friend from Med School-and lapsing into the first person tells his whole tale of how he got to this point. Very compelling. I also liked the way he was clearly going mad-no need to point this out-Wells figured the reader was smart enough to see it one his own.
Good Stuff
