This middle grade novel is pure queer joy.

I read more YA and adult novels than anything, and all too often queer books are sad books, or at least full of incredibly heavy struggle. And this book is not without its challenge, of course, but it is not too heavy bear. This book proves that you don't have to be sad to be profound, and writers of queer books would do well to take note.

It's a perfect example of what kids can realistically do and accomplish when adults are still the decision makers. It's an excellent conversation starter for families. How has the world changed since parents were kids themselves? Are parents allowed to make mistakes? Can mistakes come from a place of misguided love?

This is just beautiful. I'm so glad I read it. Also, the audiobook is captivating.
