The Thirty-Nine Steps by John Buchan

adventurous funny mysterious fast-paced

This is really good fun! The protagonist seems so naive at first that I wondered if this was some kind of Total Recall situation where the hero, bored of his pedestrian life, offers an ultimatum of the universe for something interesting to happen and lo and behold receives it. I was waiting for the whole time for some clue that things were not what they appeared to be, but in this case it was more like this book was casting the mold for future subversions of the genre. Still, an exciting and funny book.
