Born a Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah

5.0

Wow. I know it's been a while since I've written a review, but I have some time so I will. This book completely surprised me. I've watched Trevor Noah's stand up on Netflix and Youtube, but this book was a portrait of his life that I'd never imagined. It was full of heartfelt stories but also some humor, and it tells the best story a person could tell: the story of a relationship between mother and child.
And the craziest story was at the very end! Oh, this book made me want to cry for several reasons. Also, it was not lost on me the fact that I am reading this right after I am Malala. Trevor's mom went through some horrible things, and part of the reason they were so horrible was because she is a woman. Men thought it was fine that she was abused by her husband. Women's rights are so overlooked in so many places for different reasons. But it breaks my heart to see that no one will help a woman in pain just because it was a man that did it. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the fact that I learned so much from this book. By that I mean both from a historical standpoint, the history of apartheid and South Africa, and also it put me in Trevor's shoes and made me think about how privileged I am. We do have one thing in common, though. A love for our mothers.
