The Heart Forger by Rin Chupeco
5.0

Okay, I really enjoyed the first book of this series. I want that on record. That said, this book is one of those books where the sequels vastly outshine the first one. I feel like all the things that may have held the first book back, they helped flesh out the second and third book.

++ Characters: This is where the cast really start to shine. Tea, as lovely as she is in book 1, was a bit bland. At the end of the first book and heading into the rest of the series, she starts waking up to the complexities of the world she's in and comes to the realization that she's going to have to start making hard choices that could be morally Not Good. And that makes her GREAT. The supporting cast also benefit from being set-up in book 1, with Kalen, Khalad, and Likh being the stand-outs.
++ World Building: Still fantastic, and we get to see way more of the world in this one. We also start to uncover more secrets about the lies and truths that the world of The Bone Witch is built on.
+ Magic: Still great. Very fun seeing the side of magic that was hidden in book 1.
+ Romance: I ADORE Tea and Kalen. They don't QUITE reach enemies to lovers, I'd say, but I'd definitely put them as antagonistic rivals to lovers. They have a lovely development here, and I think they end up being very sweet.
