What an incredible novel. If you haven't read it yet, you simply must. A stark picture of the contrast between the best and worst of humanity, this is a sweeping epic set during the Dust Bowl era, mainly focusing on the plight of one extended family, the Joads, as well as the friends they make along the way. If I had to pick one theme from this book, I couldn't. I could perhaps pick two: unregulated capitalism can get very ugly, and we're all in this together. Well, most of us.
