Neely's rich descriptions of the landscape -- the birds and trees and rolling hills -- is clearly a love song to his home state. But this love of California is also in conflict with his knowledge of the genocidal history of the early settler colonialists. While there are a few vignettes of the charming and/or salty people he met along his journey, this story needed more people and a more personal touch. A long walk is nothing if not a journey of introspection and I would have like to know more about him and what was going on in his head.
