Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books by Azar Nafisi

5.0

Nafisi's autobiography is a fascinating piece of work, which helps the reader understand what it was (is?) like to be a woman in Iran after the revolution. It wasn't an easy read but one that makes you think: it is easy to take basic human rights for granted when living in the Western world but in many places, certain groups of people are still oppressed.

At first, I have picked up this memoir due to the fact that this is a book about books. I loved reading Nafisi's analyses of books I have also read. It gave me a completely new perspective and made me want to re-read all of them, to absorb them in a new light. Furthermore, it provided me with some good recommendations as well.

Also, it made me realize that each and every one of us has a different reading experience. We read the same words but see something else, feel something else than others.
