Many have lamented before me: How to review a memoir? You are basically reviewing the author's life. This is doubly true for MetaMaus, which consists of interviews and archival contents spanning Spiegelman's life, though focusing on the period when he wrote Maus. It's tricky to review/critique without getting into parasocial territory & pretending like I know Art Spiegelman personally.
And yet... I do wish that I know him personally. (And also I've got enough of a Polish yichus that I'm actually related to another Spiegelman family on my dad's side - but that's a story for another day). After reading Maus, I wrote in my review that I wished I could say 'thank you' to Spiegelman because of the impact his comics had on me. And I feel that exact same way after reading MetaMaus. Wow.
