The Monsters We Keep by Kelsey Epler
3.0

Reads like a YA novel of enemies-to-lovers. Honestly I wish our MCs were a little younger than they actually were (19 and 24 I believe), they acted so immature that I think their ages should’ve been accordingly younger. FMC reacts to most situations with rage because she can’t process any other emotions. For example, when FMC is mad that MMC knows she’s attracted to him (and therefore she feels vulnerable), she flips out and decides to  “say the worst thing I can think of <to MMC> and wait for that barrier to build between us again” - so she tells him that he’s so worthless and unlovable that his parents got themselves killed on purpose just so they wouldn’t have to raise him. What the fuck, FMC. This is what I mean, she’s like a scared little edgelord. She does have some character development by the end but idk, I really didn’t like her.

I agree that the pacing was a mess. It was an interesting premise though, nice worldbuilding at the beginning that got forgotten as the plot picks up.

There’s a cliffhanger at the end. Booooooooo.
