Dark, deep, and philosophical.  A Brazilian sculptress walks into an empty room in her apartment, formally occupied by her maid, and sees a cockroach.  This causes her an existential crisis.  A brilliant novel of. It contains, perhaps, the most shocking scene in Portuguese literature.
