edited my rating because the more i think about it, the more i felt that i was underwhelmed by this book. it's been in my TBR for long, and seeing a good number of people with similar book vibes as mine rate it very high, i would be lying if i say i picked it up without any expectations. did i wish i didn't saw those? well, i don't really know. numbers aside, this book has been everywhere anyway.

the 0.5 there is for the lovely children which were the reason why i stuck through this book. ty kids

i would also like to contribute this with timing as well. i read this in the midst of 3 all-out fun and amazing works of fiction,  all of which shined so hard and they will live in my heart rent-free (emma, picture of dorian gray, dimension 20 fantasy high: junior year). i thought i would need something calm, and cozy such as this, but i ended up dragging myself to finish it to go back to the 3 titles i mentioned.

another criminal thing might just be linus baker. i am so neutral about him, and his talk-no-jutsu charm is not working on me. do i care too much when an outsider goes in and save a whole community with his magic speech and sometimes guts? nah, i don't really mind. it's just that it wasn't convincing for me, and i don't see what others see in him.

final nail on the coffin of mediocrity: the dialogues at the last few chapters. i will be brutally honest, i skimmed them. i could not stand them. oh no. it fully detached me from the story. why was it wrapped so cringey like that? there's a big tone shift in the last third of it, and i didn't like it

also what's up with the helen x zoe drop. came out of nowhere. i will try to pick up the next book as part of my end of the year readathon. i have a more realistic expectation now. not as excited as i was for the first book but enough love and care for sal and talia.
