All the Living and the Dead by Hayley Campbell

dark emotional informative inspiring reflective medium-paced

4.25

A dark, affecting, and deeply curious look at the dead and those who work with them. I only find that I wish Campbell had given herself more space to let her stories breathe — the pacing of so many heavy chapters, from one to another, is quite hard at times while reading more than one in a sitting.

Luckily, though she comes from a journalistic background and a facts-forward one, Campbell both honors those facts and writes of the dead and their caretakers with compassion and honesty, admitting fully to her own fears and allowing the reader to dwell on theirs. Some of the stories within will leave me thinking for awhile — in a good way — about what we leave behind.
