Kiss of the Selkie by Tessonja Odette
2.0

Copy received from the author. Voluntarily reviewing and all opinions are objective and my own.

In truth, copy received from author way back in December. It was the one and only ARC I never delivered on, but here I am, months later, finally doing it.

Why?

So I LOVED book 1, to the point I went on and bought the paperback. I enjoyed book 2. It was rough getting into it, but once it picked up, I was looking forward to it. But I did not look forward to Maisie’s story or this plot. It just didn’t sound like it’s for me, but I took the ARC because at this point, I’m invested in the series, but for all of 2022 and end of 2021, it never pulled me to start it

But then book 4 was announced, and that one sounds good. So now, I need to read book 3 first even though the series is standalones, I just can’t handle not doing so.

The 2 star rating probably says enough. And this is just my opinion but:

The romance was hard for me. I understand the author does a lot of character and worldbuilding, laying the foundation, but I think it’s too much. We didn’t meet the MMC for much into the novel, and when we did, well, he didn’t speak/interact with her for a long time. The result of this being is when he did, and the romance began, it was quick and underdeveloped in my opinion. The chemistry wasn’t there.

The plot was strange. After the other two books, a marriage competition was just odd for these characters. And normally, I love this trope.

Like book 2, this one started slow. Unlike book 2 which eventually picked up, this one did not. I remained bored for a lot of the book and once I made it to the 60% mark, I skimmed to the end, even though that was where the romance truly was. I slowed to properly read their interactions but even those, as previously mentioned, fell short.

So now, I’m about to go onto book 4, which I’m a bit nervous of. I think if I dislike that one, I may have to call the series quits since I know how much work the author throws into these books. I mean, very developed world and good writing, so no issues on editing or any other annoyance there. But if book 4 drags too, then I won’t hang onto them anymore. I do look forward to the plot/tropes though, so here’s hoping.
