Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo

5.0

One of the best books I've read this year, and very well deserving of the prize it won (in fact, I liked this more than The Testaments). The book tells the story of many women/non-binary characters whose lives interlock in sometimes surprising ways, all of whom are Black (though in one case unaware of this) and British. It's brilliant not only as a study of the individual characters but of the UK as whole. My only criticism is that some of the younger characters were not as well-developed as the older ones, it felt as if they'd been written in a way that was a tiny bit patronising (especially Yazz).
