I cried a few different times reading this novel. Octavia Butler was a genius, and her work is still so poignant and needed today. The horrors of slavery in Kindred turned my stomach. Butler didn't flinch from it because that is our history as Black Americans. But she didn't reduce our lives to just being slaves. The thing that will stay with me after I put this book back on my bookshelf is how much Black women love each other. How much Black people love each other. Even when the worst is happening to and around us, Black people can love. That's so important.
