The third book in this series departs from its predecessors in terms of pacing. Instead, what we get is the characters plotting their way methodically in search of answers to many of the mysteries and problems set up in previous books.

The characters (especially the supporting cast of cadets) get more room to be fleshed out into unique and interesting characters. It makes you cheer their successes and root for their survival that much harder. Loss in the first book becomes routine as the seconda y cast of characters is brutally whittled down. Loss in this book hits like a gut punch.

It feels like the author really took the opportunity to show off the treasure trove of worldbuilding and lore that she's had stored up for years and finally started to give us answers about the greater world politics and conflict. It's fascinating and well executed, avoiding the trap of plodding exposition that I felt for much of book one.

Violet is so metal when she's allowed to step into the spotlight as a leader in the field. I can't wait to see where she goes in the future
now that she's a political leader
