I Know This Much Is True by Wally Lamb

I was initially intimidated by the length of the novel as 897 pages looks daunting. However, I was immediately pulled in and absorbed by the fast paced action of the novel and the sincerity of the characters. Lamb keeps the reader engaged and engrossed in the intertwined life stories of all the characters whose voices and faces become more real with each turn of the page.
The story centers around the lives of twins Dominick and Thomas Birdsey. As the story unfolds, and the lives of many characters entwine, the reader is reminded of the smallness of the world and the power of family and friendship. It is an intensely powerful story about the devastating effects mental illness can have on family but also the ripple effect that floods into all aspects of life.
Many times I had to stop and ask myself if I believe in the power of fate or if there is some other higher being at work. This is one thing that I loved about this book, it caused me to look at my own current beliefs and maybe even the need to reevaluate myself. If I found myself disliking a character when first "meeting" him or her I may then find myself feeling compassion, pity, or empathy for that same character later in the novel.
This is a story that spans nations and generations meaning almost anyone can relate to one or more of the characters in "I Know This Much Is True". Everyone, however, can take away some small life lesson from the lives and experiences of Dominick, Thomas, or the myriad of other characters Lamb creates for this novel.
