look, I just needed to finish a book for the dopamine hit so I threw this one on audio knowing I'd be super interested in it. I have a certification in addictions counseling even though I don't actually use it anymore. I'm also a sober/clean girlieee for reasons. also also, I come from a family of addicts and was personally affected by someone who was a victim of the opioid epidemic. ANYWAY. for a book called dopesick it's actually very much not about the dopesick but more about the system and rich white men who helped create generations and communities of addicts dependent on substances that made those rich white men more money and conveniently for them "took out the trash." just another answer to the question: "what's considered classy when you're rich and unclassy when you're poor?" selling drugs. I guess I just wanted more science and psychology and research and journalism about why the strategy of those rich white men work so well in the areas they worked so well in. the book feels very surface level and oddly lighthearted. if you've never heard of this problem and you need an intro, this book might be a place to start but if you're already knowledgeable and looking for deeper work on this subject, don't bother with this one.
